Trench Construction:
When installing a silt fence in a trench, the geotextile material is installed in a ‘J’ shape at least 150 mm (6 inches) below the ground, following the contours of the site for effective protection from water flow. The trench is then backfilled and compacted over the installed geotextile until the trench is completely filled with compacted soil.
Soil Slicing Construction:
Another method of silt fence installation is through soil slicing. With soil-slicing silt fence construction, the geotextile material is inserted into a slit in the soil, about 0.2 to 0.3 m (8 to 12in.) deep. The silt fence is installed deep enough so that no water flow will pass under the material while allowing effective disruption to the soil above the silt fence structure to create an optimal soil condition for mechanical compaction upon completion.
